- Pisa : one of the Maritime Republics whose origins have long been uncertain; some historians attributed his foundation to the Pelasgi, others to the Greeks, other to the Ligurians, until, in the 20th Century, important archaeological discoveries have shown his Etruscan origins. The heart of this city is formed by the famous Piazza Duomo, also known as Miracles' Square, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987; in the middle of the square shines the whiteness of the main monuments of Pisa in Romanesque style: the Cathedral (realized by the architects Buscheto and Rainaldo), the Leaning Tower (realized by Bonanno Pisano, Giovanni di Simone and Tommaso Pisano), the Baptistery (realized by Diotisalvi) and the Camposanto (monumental cemetery).
- Lucca : even about the origins of Lucca have been advanced different opinions, some people supported the Ligurian hypothesis, other the Etruscan hypothesis. But what marks this city are the beautiful town walls of the 15th-17th century that are one of the best preserved in Europe, which have also allowed a good conservation of the historical center. In this "city of the 100 churches" strikes the architectural richness and abundance of towers, bell towers and Renaissance palaces; the main squares are San Michele Square (with the beautiful Basilica and the Palace of the Praetorium) and San Martino Square (with the famous Gothic Cathedral of San Martino).
