General Informations

  • The main entrance to the Palace is in Via dei Gondi. For security reasons, at both entrances, visitors are asked to pass through metal detectors and eventually be checked by the municipal policemen. Security controls can slow the access to the Palace, so it is highly recommended to arrive some time before the planned schedule.
  • You must be at the Palace 15 minutes before your scheduled entrance time to redeem your tickets.
  • All the guided tours in Palazzo Vecchio need to be reserved. If you want to see the Palace by your own, you can enter through the side door, in Via dei Gondi without reservation, but at the ticket office you have to respect the line.
  • All activities for children require the presence of an adult.
  • Occasionally tours are cancelled because Palazzo Vecchio is still a functioning civic government building. In case of cancelled tours, you will be notified.
The Old Palace is located in Signoria Square - Florence.

On the first floor of the Palace, the Monumental Quarters were richly frescoed in the Sixteenth Century by Giorgio Vasari, Marco da Faenza and Giovanni Stradano with scenes tended to exalt the Medici family. Are included in this section:

  • the hall of Leo X (dedicated to the famous Pope, with scenes that celebrate the genealogy of the family as well as the Triumphal entry of Leo X in Florence)
  • the hall of Cosimo the Elder (that in the middle of the ceiling shows Cosimo's return from the exile with his sons Piero and Giovanni)
  • the hall of Lorenzo the Magnificent
  • the hall of Cosimo I
  • the hall of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere
  • the hall of Clement VII (where the center of the ceiling shows Clement VII crowns Charles V).

Of particular interest is the Camerino of the Duchess Bianca Cappello, second wife of Francesco de' Medici, whom he married in 1579; decorated with grotesques in 1581 by Antonio d'Annibale da Campogiallo, this small and elegant environment was used by the Duchess as a studiolo and it presents a small window protected by a grate, from which one could observe in secret what happened in the adjacent Salone dei Cinquecento.

The paintings in this environment hide references to the figure of Bianca like two winged and golden lions (that refer to her Venetian origins), white swans and shells alluding to purity, as well as scenes from mythology like Leda and the Swan, The hunting of Diana, Perseus and Andromeda.
