Treasures of the Esquiline hill

Pudentiana and her sister Praxeda were the daughters of the Roman senator Pudens, who hosted St. Peter at his home for seven years. The Basilica of Saint Pudenziana, which for centuries was regarded as the oldest place of Christian worship in Rome, was actually built on the site of an ancient second-century villa two centuries later, It was transformed into a three-nave church, later seriously modified in the 16th century. The Romanesque bell tower dates back to the 13th century.

The nearby Basilica of Saint Mary Major is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome. It was built on site of a miracle occured in 352. According to legend, Pope Liberius had a vision of the Virgin Mary. In August 352 which snow fell on the top of the Esquiline. To commemorate this miracle, he built the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major), also known as the Santa Maria della Neve (Basilica of Our Lady of the Snows), at the site.
