Description

For over two millennia, the Jewish community has resided in Rome, establishing itself as one of the most ancient communities outside of the Land of Israel. The museum showcases a collection primarily originating from the Ghetto era (1555-1870), exclusively sourced from the Palazzo delle Cinque Scole or Synagogues.

Inaugurated in 2005, the Museum unveiled a new layout and expanded exhibition area to accommodate the extensive assortment of liturgical furnishings, manuscripts, incunabula, historical documents, registers, and marble works. Previously, since 1960, these treasures were displayed in a single room. However, the comprehensive study and cataloging of all the works necessitated a larger space.

Spanning across an expansive 700 square meters, the Museum is thoughtfully organized into seven distinct rooms, each with its own unique theme. A noteworthy highlight of the museum experience is the opportunity to explore two synagogues, namely the Tempio Maggiore and the Spanish Synagogue, which are seamlessly incorporated within the museum's rooms. Through these carefully curated spaces, visitors are granted a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Jewish life in Rome. The exhibits artfully depict the remarkable journey of the Jewish community as they skillfully assimilated into the socio-economic fabric of the city, all the while steadfastly preserving their rich religious and cultural heritage.
