Arcydzieło Luigi Vanvitelli

The Royal Palace of Caserta and the Royal Park are inspired by the great residences of the time as Versailles, celebrating the grandeur of the Kingdom of Naples under the Bourbons at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

In 1750 Charles of Bourbon decided to build the Royal Palace as the symbol of the new Kingdom of Naples, by that time autonomous from Spanish aegis. The project for the majestic building was committed to architect Luigi Vanvitelli.
The foundation stone was layed on January 20th, 1752 and the construction proceeded quickly until 1759, when the King of Spain died and Charles of Bourbon left Naples to reach Madrid.
After Charles’s departure, the construction works of the New Palace, so called at that time the Royal Palace, slowed down so much that they were still incomplete at the death of Luigi Vanvitelli in 1773. Carlo Vanvitelli, Luigi’s son, and then other architects managed to end this magnificent royal residence in the next century.

The Royal Palace of Caserta has a rectangular articulated plan, facing onto four large inner courtyards and covers an area of about 47,000 square meters. An imposing portico, optical telescope, is the ideal connection with the park and the waterfall, settled at the peak of the scenographic perspective escape.
The great staircase of honour connects the lower and the upper vestibule, that leads to the royal apartments. On the upper vestibule the Palatine Chapel open that indicates a clear analogy with Versailles.
The Court Theatre is a perfect example of eighteenth-century theatre architecture. You can visit also the Pinacoteca and the Nativity Scene, the Picture Gallery (Quadreria) and the Museum of decorative arts.
The traditional visit to the Royal Palace of Caserta has been recently magnified by inedited routes.

Inside the Royal paace and gardens you can admire masterpieces such as:

  • The royal apartments
  • The unedited pantings of the Picture Gallery
  • The Palatine Chapel
  • The elliptical vault of the Great Staircase of Honour
  • The optical telescope

"Reservar con esta empresa fue fácil y rápido. En cuanto al palacio, impresionan sus jardines y es una auténtica pena que no estén cuidados, al menos en verano. Se veían pardizos y con las estatuas sucias. De engalanarlos serían auténticamente brutales. Aún así merece la pena verlos. El palacio está bastante bien. "

"Italy Tickets.Com delivered a great service and I used the tickets well. As for the Palace and Gardens - I can not comment on the gardens because we did not have enough yime to see it all. It looked stunning but because my husband has a disability he could not walk in the gardens. We were well assisted by the staff and they were helpful to point out the use an elevator. It was difficult for my husband to walk the distance to the entrance of the palace as we were not allowed to park closely. The front gardens were neglected and I thought someone could tidy it up. I think that "someone" is the problem. Once inside the palace it was stuniing with excellent commentary on the audio guide. I didn't like the fact that I had to hand over my passport as a bond to return the audio equipment. The reason I gave this palace a 5 star is not due to the fact that it is a place like Versailles in France but due to the history it conveys. It is as if one could feel the struggle of the ruling class there. One can understand the inner struggles of the various rulers much better when you look, see and then decide on your own point of view. It also conveys the struggle of the local authorities that do not have enough money to restore it to its former glory. "

"Ottima visita, peccato che sia visitabile solo una parte e non la reggia nel suo complesso, modalità che permetterebbe di scoprire come si svolgeva la vita dei proprietari e anche dei loro cortigiani e soprattutto dei loro servitori."
