A surprising Museum

The building was built in 1288 and later it became the seat of the municipality for which it was also called the Palazzo del Popolo; from 1852 on to the upper floors we find the Civic Museum of San Gimignano rich in important works of art.

The path begins on the first floor from the Dante's Hall so called due to the visit in about 1300 that the poet Dante Alighieri made to the city of San Gimignano as ambassador of the Florentine Republic; the room is decorated with a wonderful cycle of frescoes with hunting scenes created by Azzo di Masetto, but the protagonist is the beautiful Majesty realized by Lippo Memmi and inspired by the Sienese one made by Simone Martini.

Then we enter the Secret Meetings Room that still houses the ancient carved wooden seats, and later we arrive to the second floor where the Paintings Gallery is located, with important works such as the wooden Crucifix of Coppo di Marcovaldo, the Virgin with Child in humility with angels and saints by Benozzo Gozzoli, and the Announcer Angel and Virgin Announced by Filippino Lippi.
Also interesting is the Hall of the Podestà, frescoed with a particular cycle of paintings attributed to Memmo di Filippuccio, Lippo's father, depicting love scenes and moral examples for the Podestà who mustn't give in to corruption.
